7/26/2009 - The World Comes to EAA AirVenture
OSHKOSH WI- A quick look around the grounds today revealed an exciting new look for 2009 at AirVenture 2009. A new main gate entrance was dedicated Sunday with two Pratt and Whitney 1830 engine-and-propeller sculptures.
"This entrance is the start of a journey to keep Oshkosh the premier aviation event in the world." Poberezny said. "When designing the entrance, maintaining the culture but still keeping it fresh and modern was kept in mind."
All though AirVenture are seen additional new benches for resting, flushing toilets, new signage and specially planted green shade areas. The "Brown Arch" the original and traditional entry to the Oshkosh flightline in 1971 is now a meeting area complete with engraved bricks, benches and landscaping. Bricks may be purchased to leave your mark at the Brown Arch by visiting the Brown Arch tent or the EAA Welcome Center for details.
"This legacy area will be here as long as Oshkosh is here," Poberezny said. "I hope the phrase 'Meet me at the Brown Arch' will mean something to you and be a gathering point at Oshkosh."
The 3,000 tribute bricks, each measuring 2 square feet, feature a biplane outline made up of 160 bricks. Four compass rose bricks-two flanking the north and two flanking the south- make up the biplane's cowling, and the centerpiece in the compass rose will be an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration marker providing the distance to flight's birthplace, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Poberezny dedicated both entrances to the four Ps of EAA, "Planes - that bring us together; people--the real reason why we come; passion--our love of flight; and participation - our ability to be involved."
This year represents only first phase of a 10-year plan of site enhancements. The primary directive is said to be "to significantly upgrade and enhance the AirVenture site's layout, design, infrastructure, amenities and transportation while maintaining the event's unique and compelling culture.
Opening on Monday, July 27 until August 2, EAA AirVenture will be the place over 540,000 aviation enthusiast will visit, over 10,000 aircraft will fly and over 37,000 will camp. -B Meyer, FMI: http://www.airventure.org/
