12/27/2009 - Marion Military Institute Begins New Flight Training Program

Marion AL- Ground School for the 2009 flight training class at Marion Military Institute recently started on the MMI campus.  A partnership with SouthStar Aviation of Montgomery and Marion-Vaiden Field Airport and Marion Military Institute is launching the new course. The flight training is the first offered since the 1960s that will qualify students for a private pilot's license.  Students of the MMI 2009-2010 Flight Class logged their first training flights at Marion-Vaiden Field on Saturday, November 7, in a Cessna 152.

The eight flight cadets and one faculty instructor who comprise the 2009 class of MMI flight students will draw on a proud legacy of military and civilian pilots who studied at MMI.  General Bruce Holloway (1912-September 30, 1999) one of the famed Flying Tigers of World War II and later Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Air Command, is but one of the many MMI alumni to achieve renown in aviation.  Additionally, the induction last year of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen into the Alabama Military Hall of Honor, located on the campus of MMI, will provide further inspiration to these fledgling aviators. Most of the flight cadets are attending MMI under one of the school's military commissioning programs. -Courtesy of Bill Hansen
