10/18/2005 - Cramer Helps Break Ground on New Airport Tower
Huntsville, Ala. - U.S. Representative Bud Cramer (D-Ala.) joined officials from the Port of Huntsville today to help break ground on a new 219 foot air traffic control tower at the Huntsville International Airport.
"This tower will be a much needed addition to our airport," said Cramer. "Our community has grown like few others in the southeast and a new tower is essential for the safety of travelers and for the future growth of North Alabama."
Representative Cramer has taken a lead role with the new tower. He worked with numerous officials in the Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Transportation, and the Administration to make this project a priority.
Cramer also successfully lobbied the Administration to include the airport tower in the annual budget submission to Congress. Cramer said, "Having our airport tower included as a priority in his budget emphasized the tower's importance to our state and nation."
Representative Cramer is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. Through his seat on the committee, Cramer secured $20.7 million for the construction of the new tower.
"Initially, the FAA wanted to renovate the current tower, but I knew it wouldn't be enough," said Cramer. "Our international airport has always been a major selling point for our area for new industries, and this tower will enhance the value of our airport. Having this new tower will only add to what we are trying to accomplish throughout North Alabama."
