HSV is the second-largest passenger airport in Alabama, but when combined with the adjacent International Intermodal Center, it is the largest air cargo facility in the state, and an air cargo hub for the entire southeastern United States. Eight air cargo carriers offer domestic service and weekly international flights to Europe, Asia, and Mexico.
The airport is currently constructing Taxiway L to directly connect the Intermodal center with the airport's west runway - which at 12,600 feet is the second-longest runway in the southeast. Currently, the only other taxiway connecting the Intermodal center to the west runway is Taxiway J, which is an indirect route that passes through the apron where passenger aircraft are parked.
Taxiway L will be 3,800 feet long and 100 feet wide. Where East Boeing Circle crosses the new taxiway, the roadway will travel beneath the taxiway with a 264-foot long, 2-lane concrete arch tunnel.
Gallet's role during construction is to provide Quality Assurance (QA) testing for Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc. (PBS&J) of Nashville and G.W. Jones and Sons Consulting Engineers of Huntsville, who have jointly planned and designed the project.
Gallet is providing field and laboratory testing of soil, aggregate, Portland cement concrete, and bituminous concrete for the taxiway, roadway, and tunnel, following FAA, ALDOT, and AASHTO specifications.
Nick Branham is Gallet's lead technician on the taxiway project. Nick previously provided testing services for related projects at the Huntsville Airport in 2001 and 2002 - the extension of the west taxiway and improvements at the Intermodal center. He is an ALDOT Level 2 Superpave technician, and is NICET-certified in soil, concrete, and asphalt.
Taxiway L will improve the air cargo handling capability of the Huntsville International Airport, and will even give the airport the potential to handle the passenger and freighter versions of the huge new Airbus A380. Gallet is very pleased to be able to participate in the construction of this exciting new project. Source: Frank Whitman, P.E., Manager -Gallet & Associates, Inc., North Alabama Operations.
